EDIUS was initially designed only to be used with Canopus' own hardware, but that stipulation was removed with version 2. Now you can use it with a simple OHCI FireWire adaptor, yet its real-time capabilities remain immense. The fast real-time performance is achieved by a very efficient engine. But there's also the same buffering system as found in Let's Edit. This lets you temporarily go beyond the capabilities of your hardware by pre-loading a fixed number of frames before starting playback.

The buffer will also refill during less intensive sections. We managed to blend five layers of DV with effects in real-time on our 3GHz dual Xeon test system - all output via FireWire as well. If we'd had Canopus' DVStorm2 Pro PCI card taking care of the latter, even more would have been possible. The editing features are now extensive, including lots of powerful filters such as white balancing replete with black and grey level control as well. However, both Premiere Pro and Liquid Edition have more filters and transitions on offer. EDIUS's titling is capably taken care of by a TitleMotion Pro 4.3 plug-in. This is one of the best titlers around and has incredibly detailed text animation options.
Canopus' own ProCoder Express is also bundled, offering wizards to create streaming media and MPEG output. While there's no DVD burning built in, EDIUS can edit MPEG2 files. In fact, it can mix MPEG and DV on the same timeline - in real-time. But EDIUS does have its quirks. For a start, the interface was really designed with a dual-monitor setup in mind. Even on a 1,280 x 1,024 screen it feels a little cramped. It also won't let you put a key and a picture-in-picture on the same clip at once.
Unlike other filters, these kind of effects have their own special position on the filmstrip. Admittedly, this isn't something you'd do everyday, but it's annoying not to have the ability there if you need it. More annoying, however, is the inability to keyframe most video filters - something even some sub-£100 packages can do. Although EDIUS has more real-time power than any other video-editing app, it can't overcome Pinnacle Liquid Edition 6 as an overall package. It's a great video editor, and we can't wait to see how it develops. But for now Liquid Edition 6 almost matches the real-time capabilities, has more features and capable DVD authoring for nearly £100 less.
